Hong Kong Family Relocates to Hampshire, United Kingdom for a Brighter Future
Moving country is never an easy decision, especially when it means leaving behind familiarity, family and a fast-paced city life. For Debbie (38) and her husband Eric (40), relocating from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom (UK) was driven by one overwhelming priority: giving their son Ayden the healthiest, happiest start in life possible. As parents, they found themselves thinking beyond the present, considering not just where they lived, but how their surroundings would shape their son’s wellbeing, education and everyday childhood experiences. After travelling more than 6,000 miles, the family are now happily settled at Berkeley's Hartland Village, embracing a calmer pace of life, a close-knit community and the space for their son to grow, learn and thrive. Why Choose the UK for Family Living? Debbie and Eric had lived in Hong Kong their entire lives, but becoming parents in 2020 naturally changed how they viewed city living. Busy streets, high-rise apartments and limited access to outdoor space prompted deeper conversations about the kind of childhood they wanted for Ayden, one with room to play, fresh air to breathe and a balanced education. Debbie explains: “My sister moved to the UK in 2022, and we frequently came to visit her here after she moved. My husband and I both loved the different lifestyle that the UK could offer; being here, our son could grow up surrounded by the countryside and have a more relaxed, all-rounded education. So, we made the decision to relocate in time for him to start school in September 2025.” The decision brought reassurance that they were planning not just for today, but for Ayden’s long-term happiness and development. Hartland Village in Fleet, Hampshire, surrounded by landscaped green spaces and waterways. Why Hampshire and Hartland Village? Hampshire quickly stood out as the perfect balance between countryside calm and everyday convenience. For the family, it wasn’t just about location, it was about choosing a place where their son could enjoy the outdoors daily, attend excellent local schools and grow up in a safe, welcoming environment. Hartland Village, located in Fleet, offered everything they were searching for: green open spaces, thoughtful design and a community built with families in mind. Since moving in April 2025, the family have embraced their new surroundings, with Hartland Country Park right on their doorstep and Fleet Pond just a short walk away, places that have become part of their everyday routine. Life at Hartland Village: Community and Countryside Adjusting to life at Hartland Village has felt natural and rewarding for the family, offering a sense of ease they hadn’t experienced before. Debbie and Eric share how life at Hartland Village has supported their family’s new chapter: “We’re all loving the change in lifestyle. Aayden has settled into his new school really well, and we’re enjoying exploring Fleet and the local countryside at weekends. We’re so lucky to have Hartland Country Park on our doorstep where we regularly go for bike rides, and our chihuahua, Roll, loves chasing birds at Fleet Pond, which is also really nearby.” For Debbie and Eric, watching their son settle happily into school and enjoy the outdoors has been one of the most reassuring signs that they made the right decision. Finding the Perfect Berkeley Home Making such a big move from overseas came with its challenges, particularly when it came to finding the right home. However, with support from family already based in the UK and guidance from Berkeley’s sales team, the process felt both personal and reassuring. Debbie explains: “Hartland Village really stuck out to us as it’s in the English countryside, and the school options in Fleet are brilliant. So, my sister kindly visited the site and video-called us when she was there, so that we could see the available properties. She and the Berkeley sales team also sent me lots of videos and pictures, so we could truly get a feel for the home we were going to buy.” Knowing they were choosing a home designed with families in mind gave them confidence, even from thousands of miles away. Landscaped green spaces and contemporary homes at Hartland Village, Fleet, Hampshire. A Home Designed for Everyday Living The family had a clear vision for their new home, one that supported everyday family life, moments together and simple joys. “A good-sized kitchen was crucial for us, and I love sunshine, so a south-facing garden was a must. This home has both, the kitchen is perfect for baking and cooking, and the garden is filled with light all year round.” Even during winter, the home feels bright and welcoming, a place where family time naturally takes centre stage. Hartland Village: A Growing Community Beyond the home itself, it was the sense of belonging that truly made Hartland Village feel special. “There’s such a strong community at Hartland Village. We’ve got to know our immediate neighbours really well, and we regularly share home baked goods with them. Berkeley also puts on events for the residents once a month, so that’s been a great way to build new friendships.” For a family starting a new chapter in a new country, these connections have been invaluable. Looking Ahead As they settle into their first year at Hartland Village, Debbie and Eric are looking forward to creating family traditions and watching their son grow in a safe, welcoming environment, supported by green open spaces and a strong sense of community. Debbie concludes: “We’d certainly recommend buying a home with Berkeley. They are an excellent developer; the design and quality of their homes are just exceptional, and the customer service is brilliant. Their sales team was there every step of the way and gave advice whenever we needed it.” Find Out More Discover more about our development at Hartland Village. Behind the Berkeley Experience: Thomas Kuok on Delivering Hospitality-Grade Service in Real Estate
At Berkeley Group, Relationships Go Beyond the Sale At Berkeley Group, we believe real estate is more than just property, it’s about people. Few embody this ethos more than Thomas Kuok, our Head of Emerging Markets, whose background in hospitality and immigration advisory has given him a unique lens into the needs of international buyers. With experience spanning customer relations and sales, Thomas brings a rare blend of empathy, precision, and cultural understanding to the global property journey. We had the opportunity to sit down with Thomas to learn more about his transition into real estate, the value of long-term client relationships, and how developments like Bermondsey Place are reshaping London’s investment landscape. Join us as we explore how Thomas applies a hospitality mindset to international real estate, creating seamless, personalised experiences for buyers around the world. A conversation with Thomas Kuok Welcome, Thomas, and thank you for joining us for these quick 10 questions! 1. You’ve transitioned from hospitality to property, blending service excellence with real estate expertise. How has this shaped the way you help buyers find their perfect home? With a background in hospitality and immigration advisory services, I’ve developed a personalised approach that really resonates with international buyers. Transitioning from Customer Relations to Sales at Berkeley gave me first-hand insights into what matters most to buyers around the world. I take time to understand each client’s individual needs—whether it's lifestyle, education, or cultural fit—and offer tailored guidance that simplifies the entire homebuying process. 2. The UK property market has always attracted international investors. What makes it such a compelling choice today, even with global economic shifts? The UK continues to be a global safe haven for property investment. Its legal transparency, robust education system and economic resilience make it a reliable choice. London, in particular, remains a magnet for talent and innovation, thanks to its status as a global hub for finance and professional services. Add to that the UK’s relatively open stance toward overseas buyers, and it’s easy to see why demand remains strong. 3. For overseas buyers, purchasing property remotely can feel overwhelming. How does Berkeley make the process easy, transparent, and stress-free? We’ve invested in tools that make remote buying feel as immersive as being there in person—from 3D show flats and drone footage to animation and now even Apple Vision Pro. Our multilingual team ensures buyers feel supported every step of the way, offering regular updates and tailored communication. Whether in-person or virtual, we’re there to make the journey smooth and reassuring. 4. Can you share a standout story of a client who found their dream home with Berkeley? What made their journey special? One of the most memorable moments was helping a couple buy their dream home during lockdown. Despite travel restrictions, we managed everything virtually—from viewings to handover. I even personally looked after their home until they could finally collect the keys two years later. They were so pleased with the experience, they went on to buy another property with us. It’s moments like these that highlight the long-term relationships we build. 5. You’ve probably seen buyers at every stage, first-time investors, families relocating, and seasoned property owners. How do their priorities differ, and how does Berkeley meet those evolving needs? First-time buyers often focus on value and growth potential. Families prioritise schools, green space, and community. Seasoned investors look for strong yields and capital appreciation. Berkeley’s diverse portfolio allows us to cater to each of these priorities, and our team is trained to guide clients based on their specific life stage and investment goals. 6. In your view, what sets Berkeley apart, not just in terms of homes, but in the relationships you build with clients across the buying journey? We don’t just sell homes; we build long-term relationships. Our recognition from In-house Research Ltd, with awards like the Gold Award and Outstanding Achievement Award, shows our dedication to service excellence. We stay connected with buyers long after the sale—because to us, that relationship is just beginning. 7. What excites you most about Bermondsey Place as Berkeley’s latest launch? Are there any standout features that buyers should really pay attention to? Bermondsey Place offers a rare opportunity at an accessible price point in a rapidly regenerating Zone 2 location. With a £10 billion regeneration plan and the proposed Bakerloo line extension, the growth potential is substantial. It’s a smart move for buyers looking for long-term value in a vibrant part of London. 8. Bermondsey Place sits in the heart of Zone 2. What makes the location especially attractive to international buyers? Its proximity to Elephant & Castle and Canada Water is key—both areas are familiar to our international audience and have transformed significantly in recent years. Buyers have already seen great returns from those areas, and Bermondsey Place is poised to follow the same upward trend. 9. From your perspective, how does Bermondsey Place reflect the evolving lifestyle needs of today’s international buyers? It strikes the perfect balance. You’ve got Bermondsey Street’s art and food scene just minutes away, Burgess Park for green space, and direct transport links into the City. The design and amenities reflect modern expectations, yet it’s grounded in a sense of community and place. 10. From a long-term investment standpoint, what opportunities do you see at Bermondsey Place, especially given its Zone 2 location? This is a golden opportunity for long-term investors. With ongoing regeneration, strong infrastructure plans, and Berkeley’s commitment to quality, Bermondsey Place offers both solid rental yield and impressive capital growth potential. It’s an investment in the future of London. The Global Buyer’s Compass Whether guiding first-time investors or seasoned buyers, Thomas Kuok brings more than market expertise, he brings a people-first mindset that transforms transactions into long-term partnerships. His journey from concierge-level care to strategic leadership reflects Berkeley’s ethos: world-class homes, delivered with integrity.
