Our History
A snapshot of our historical journey
1976
The Berkeley Group was established by Tony Pidgley CBE and Jim Farrer. The company initially focused on the construction of single homes and executive development.
It quickly became renowned for the quality of its product and exceptional customer service. Consequently, the business grew at a rapid pace.
1985
Berkeley gained a full listing on the London Stock Exchange.
In less than ten years of operation, Berkeley had grown from an entrepreneurial business capitalised at £50,000 to a fully listed group valued at over £67 million.
2011
Berkeley has increasingly focused on large-scale brownfield regeneration sites where our holistic approach to placemaking and community building can deliver lasting positive change.
2012
In 2012, the Berkeley Group expanded its global presence by opening its first international offices in Hong Kong and Singapore. These strategic moves signalled the Group's commitment to reaching a wider, diverse clientele and fostering relationships with global partners and investors.
Berkeley, founded in 1976, is the Group's largest division. The group operates mainly in London and the South of England on a diverse range of projects, from large regenerations to specialties like the Crossrail station box at Royal Arsenal Riverside.
Founded as a joint venture company co-owned by the Berkeley Group and M&G Investments, St. Edward is the powerful combination of the two companies’ strengths and complementary skills that provide a strong vehicle for delivering unique residentially-led developments.
St George's main focus is on transforming large areas of brownfield land to revive the city landscape and create thriving new destinations. Some of St George's iconic developments are now featured on the London skyline.
Founded in 1996 as a joint venture with Thames Water, St James has built a reputation as a design-conscious developer over two decades. St James is committed to regenerating sites into attractive, environmentally-friendly developments.
St Joseph is Berkeley Group's newest brand based in the Midlands. The business believes that inspiring public realm is the cornerstone of a happy, thriving community and it is committed to delivering the very best developments for local people.
As a joint venture between National Grid and Berkeley Group, St William's mission is to transform aged industrial sites into beautiful homes. St William will unlock some of the most technically complex regeneration sites at the heart of communities across London and the South of England, making homes accessible to all.

Berkeley Foundation
Building a brighter future for the youth
Staying true to our commitment to the community, an independent foundation was founded by the Berkeley Group in 2011. Our purpose is to support young individuals in overcoming obstacles, enhancing their lives, and fostering a more equitable society.
More details1. What is Berkeley Foundation
The Berkeley Foundation is the independent charitable foundation set up by Berkeley Group in 2011. We work in partnership with the voluntary sector and others to help young people overcome barriers, improve their lives and build a fairer society.
2. How we do
We do this primarily by funding high-quality frontline support for marginalised young people. Our four focus areas are:
- A safe place to call home: Ensuring young people have secure, stable accommodation
- Health and wellbeing: Supporting young people to live happy, healthy lives
- The skills to succeed: Helping young people develop the skills and capabilities they need to thrive
- Access to employment: Enabling young people to overcome barriers to work and kick-start their careers
We have long-term relationships with selected strategic partners, and support 20 local charities chosen by Berkeley staff and close to Berkeley’s offices in London, Birmingham and the South of England. We also have a Community Investment Fund that provides targeted funding focused on specific issues, such as young people’s mental health.
Berkeley Group provides core funding for the Foundation and pays all its overheads, which means that every penny raised is spent on charitable activities.
On top of this, Berkeley staff do an incredible job of raising money through a busy calendar of fundraising events and Give As You Earn. Berkeley Group matches everything they raise, pound for pound. In total, staff have raised over £6 million since the launch of the Foundation.
3. Achievements
Since 2011, we have committed more than £20 million in funding to our local communities, reaching 30,000 people.
