From early years provision to university level study, Guildford offers a well-rounded environment that supports learning at every stage and is home to some of the highest-ranking schools in Surrey and the UK.

For higher education, the University of Surrey brings a vibrant academic thread to the town. Its research reputation and active student community bring energy to local life while also offering pathways for older students to continue their studies close to home.

A global academic leader: The University of Surrey attracts over 15,000 students and excels in high-growth technical sectors.

The University of Surrey itself is just eight minutes by bike or 19 minutes on foot from Arch & Bloom, and is ranked 3rd in the South East in The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026. Known for excellence in aerospace, telecommunications, engineering and hospitality, the university is further expanding its academic offering with the launch of its new medical school in Autumn 2026. It is also supported by Surrey Research Park, home to over 100 innovation-led companies.

The Surrey Education Experience, Through a Student’s Eyes

Assistant Marketing Manager at Berkeley International, Norakamol Senavinin, is among those who have benefitted from the University of Surrey’s strong credentials. She completed a one-year master’s degree in International Hotel Management, a programme she had long set her sights on. Nora comments: “Surrey was considered the top university for this course. I knew I wanted to study in the UK, and once I discovered Surrey, it was the only place I could imagine doing my master’s.”

A secure environment: Surrey's low crime rate makes it a primary choice for international students and families.

Looking back on her student experience with fondness, Nora adds: “Guildford isn’t a typical university town, it’s quieter than a big city, and I really enjoyed that. It offered a gentler pace of life while still having everything a student could want. Even when I finished late shifts at the restaurant, I always felt safe walking to the bus station. There was never any reason to feel uneasy; it’s such a lovely town.”

Guildford is one of the county’s best-performing areas for independent education, with several schools regularly appearing in national “Best Of” lists. The town also boasts excellent state education. Seven ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ rated primary schools lie within 1.3 miles of Berkeley’s Arch & Bloom development, and five similarly rated secondary schools within 1.7 miles. (Table 1)

The town also benefits from The Guildford School of Acting (GSA), internationally recognised as a leading conservatoire, particularly for musical theatre and acting. Its distinguished alumni include Bill Nighy (Love Actually and the Pirates of the Caribbean series) and Michael Ball, the acclaimed English singer. Ranked among the top 10 in the UK for Drama, Dance and inematics in publications such as the Complete University Guide (2026) and The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide (2026), GSA’s reputation for nurturing creativity and industry-ready skills makes it a highly attractive choice for aspiring performers and creative arts professionals.

For students considering higher education, the area is also within easy reach of several other notable universities including Royal Holloway, University of London in nearby Egham, Kingston University, St Mary’s University Twickenham, and the University for the Creative Arts adding breadth to future study options.

For families seeking a place where learning fits naturally into a fulfilling way of life, Guildford continues to stand out as a location with lasting appeal.
